Electro-Mechanical & Civil Construction |
| |
MBH is a full-service engineering and contracting firm for numerous industries. We perform detailed engineering and construction for all facets of work. It is important to note that MBH self-performs 95% of this work. We do not subcontract primary disciplines of work. Our own labor forces perform disciplines such as design, civil, and electrical. By self-performing these disciplines MBH has control over scheduling and costing for projects.
The procedures that we follow concerning project management administration vary greatly and depend upon the type, complexity, schedule and size of a project. There are two guidelines which we follow every time. MBH always assigns a separate project manager skilled in their particular discipline for each area that might be involved on a job whether it is electromechanical or civil. A lead project manager is assigned to be the sole contact with the owner on multi-discipline jobs.
Project managers are based at our main office and make weekly trips or more, if necessary, to the job site to assist in coordinating construction activities by checking on progress, safety, quality, schedule and costs. We can, and have, placed project managers on-site on a full-time basis, but do not feel that this practice is normally required. We feel that our project managers further the needs of the project at the home office where they can have immediate access to control engineering, procurement, expediting, billing, etc. The project managers are in daily contact with their site superintendents.
MBH's skilled field personnel play a critical part in maintaining high productivity levels on every project. Superintendents perform a vital role in controlling all aspects of the day-to-day operations at the job site. All general foremen, timekeepers, material expediters or other personnel report directly to the superintendent. The general foremen that we utilize on our projects are all company men. We do not use personnel that we are unfamiliar with in these roles.
MBH Power Ltd has been "working as partners" with numerous industries in providing cost-effective engineering and construction services as part of their investments in new facilities as well as expansion, modernization & rehabilitation projects and installations. |

| ENGINEERING SERVICES |

| Design with Constructability in Mind |
| images----------------------------------------------------------------------- |
Our engineering staff consists of civil and electro-mechanical engineers as well as a full array of supporting draftsmen who design with constructability in mind. This part of the MBH team can serve many roles. They can be the lead on design/build projects or work hand-in-hand with the client's engineering staff and outside process engineers to create final construction drawings.
Our engineers interface with most - if not all - departments within MBH's multifaceted organization whether it be estimating, purchasing, expediting, scheduling or project management. They are able to integrate schedule, budget and project parameters for the owner as well as intervene for conflict resolution as required.
During the engineering phase of projects, our engineering team will be involved with:
|
- Scheduling — they will develop a detailed project engineering schedule which is coordinated with construction's efforts as well as the owner's requirements in terms of priorities. It would incorporate realistic activity sequences and duration, allocation of labor and materials, processing of shop drawings and samples, and delivery of long lead items.
- Construction Budget — they will work with the estimating department to update the budget at the end of the schematic engineering phase and assist in refining this estimate for the owner's approval as the development of the drawings and specifications proceed. If it appears that the project construction budget will not be met, they will make recommendations for corrective action.
- Value Engineering and Constructability — they will attend regular meetings with the owner's engineering department during conceptual and preliminary design to advise onsite use and improvements, selection of materials and equipment. Recommendations will be provided on construction feasibility, availability of materials and labor, time requirements for installation and construction, and factors related to cost including alternative designs or materials, preliminary budgets, and possible economies.
- Coordination of Contract Documents — they will develop a system of recording document progress and changes throughout the engineering stage. Drawings and specifications are reviewed as they are prepared and alternatives recommended whenever details affect construction feasibility or schedules.
- Long-Lead Items — they will recommend for purchase the procurement of long-lead items to ensure their delivery by the required dates for installation or construction use.
- Purchasing/Expediting — they will assist the Purchasing Department in the acquisition of materials, supplies and equipment for the project.
|
|
In the event that an outside engineering firm is used by the owner for our construction team, our department can review the drawings and specifications in order to eliminate areas of conflict and overlapping in the work to be performed by the various trades.
These engineers and draftsmen can be based at many locations: our home office, the client's engineering department, or in an on-site construction trailer. No matter where they are located, our engineering drawings can be created either with AutoCAD, Microstation or manually.
Prior to the start of each project a determination is made on the type of drawing and level of detail required. All "as-built" drawings and documents in both hard copy and electronic media are furnished to the owner upon completion of projects. |

Dr.Ifesie-Head Transmission-TCN (white suit) along with Regional Transmission Manager-Engr. Anyamah (right most), Engr. Prakash (left most) and Mr. Mukhi, Managing Director of MBH Power Ltd during hand-over function of 132/33kV Aba Substation Reinforcement Project, in the eastern part of Nigeria.
MBH Power Ltd has self-performed all construction phases of substation work at Greenfield sites or upgraded existing yards for utilities as well as commercial and industrial customers to meet their electrical distribution needs. Substations ranging from 6.3kV to 330 kV have been installed throughout the country by MBH.
Our civil group begins a substation project by clearing the area of trees, removing or adding of earthwork, and grading the site in preparation for construction. They are also responsible for all roadways, seeding and sedimentation control, perimeter security fencing and signage, and stone yard cover.
With the station at final grade, foundations of various dimensions and depths are formed and poured, and anchor bolts set. MBH's crew would then erect a control house or switch gear building.
MBH's electrical forces are then deployed for the entire electrical installation of the substation. This stage normally involves establishing the ground grid, and situating all underground control cables and conduits as well as associated trenching, sand, and back filling.
Steel and concrete structures are then set on the foundations. Once these structures are in place, MBH's veteran work force installs designated equipment such as:
|
- Power & Grounding Transformers
- High Voltage Circuit Breakers ( 33,132, 330kV etc)
- Arresters;
- Isolator (Disconnect Switches);
- Insulators;
- Welded and Bolted Bus;
- Capacitors; and
- Aluminium Conductors and accessories.
|
|
Power transformers of all sizes, including large-scale 150MVA, are installed, assembled, oil-filled and tested. Internal equipment such as control panels, Communication equipment, batteries, lighting, and all other power and control requirements are then assembled.
The primary advantage that MBH has to offer in countering the challenges of substation work is our experience. We thoroughly plan all activities so that work progresses in an efficient manner. These intricate projects are also accomplished with no interference to operations prior to energizing the station.
MBH's success with substations can be clearly attributed to maintaining and executing the fundamentals of project management. Planning and detailing of each work item on a schedule together with the ability to adapt to changing conditions are essential ingredients to the early completion of projects as well as the elimination of cost overruns.
